November 13 at 8 PM

As America marks its 250th anniversary and Gettysburg commemorates the anniversary of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, the Sunderman Conservatory Wind Symphony presents a program tracing the American story from its Revolutionary roots through Civil War memory to the present day. The concert features Aaron Copland's Lincoln Portrait, narrated by Richard Sautter, a local actor, director, and member of the theatre faculty at McDaniel College. Sautter has written and performed four solo shows, including "My Gettysburg Address: Or Swimming to the High Water Mark," which asks What happens when America's most sacred ground is also the place where you live? The program also includes Richard Danielpour's Vox Populi ("voice of the people"), William Schuman's New England Triptych, drawn from Revolutionary era hymns by William Billings including "Be Glad Then, America," "When Jesus Wept," and "Chester," Frank Ticheli's Shenandoah, Carolyn Bremer's Early Light, and Jack Stamp's Cenotaph. This concert is an official America 250th – Adams County event.

This performance previews a reprise of Lincoln Portrait at the Gettysburg College Civil War Institute's Fortenbaugh Memorial Lecture on November 19, the closing event of the town wide "Lincoln at Gettysburg: Shall Not Perish" commemoration. That performance will be narrated by actor Bruce Boxleitner, known for his roles in Tron and Babylon 5, and as an author of science fiction and suspense novels. Boxleitner will soon appear in the upcoming film Gettysburg 1863, premiering at the Majestic Theater November 13-17.

The Wind Symphony is the premier wind and percussion ensemble in the Sunderman Conservatory of Music. Conducted by Director of Bands Dr. Russell McCutcheon and comprised of a select group of 40-50 musicians, the ensemble rehearses and performs some of the best new literature and wind band masterworks in four major concerts each year as well as an annual student conductor concert. In 2018, the Wind Symphony toured Berlin, Leipzig, and Prague, performing a feature concert in Mendelssohn Hall at the Gewandhaus and a festival concert at Smetana Hall by invitation as part of the Prague Instrumental Music Festival. In 2019, the ensemble performed its Kennedy Center debut in Washington, D.C. as the invited feature college/university ensemble for the Sousa Band Invitational. In 2023, the Wind Symphony completed a tour of the Baltics, performing in the Kaunas Philharmonic Hall in Kaunas, Lithuania, the Great Guild Hall in Riga, Latvia, and the MUBA School of Music and Dance in Estonia.
