Prepare for a thrilling concert with the Sunderman Conservatory Wind Symphony and conductor Dr. Russell McCutcheon. The concert will showcase a diverse and exciting program, featuring a special performance by Master Sergeant Aaron Scott, clarinetist from The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own.” Scott will perform Scott McAllister’s X Concerto, an exhilarating piece for clarinet and wind ensemble. X Concerto is heavily influenced by the raw, powerful sound of grunge music, particularly from bands like Nirvana and Alice in Chains. It channels the energy, intensity, and emotions of the X generation with its explosive, driving rhythms and contrasting psychedelic passages, offering a unique musical experience.
The Wind Symphony will also present the world premiere of Cosmos, composed and conducted by senior music education major Penelope Michua-Brooks. This thought-provoking work explores the creation of the universe and how humans perceive its vastness and mystery. The ensemble is proud to debut this exciting composition by one of its own.
Adding to the rich variety of the evening is Felix Mendelssohn’s Overture for Winds, Op. 24, composed in 1824. Celebrating its 200th anniversary, this elegant piece is one of the few Romantic-era works written specifically for wind ensemble. Its traditional sonata-allegro form showcases Mendelssohn’s mastery of composition and provides a beautiful contrast to the concert's more modern works.
The program concludes with Leonard Bernstein’s lively Slava!, a vaudevillian, high-energy piece that has become a favorite for both musicians and audiences alike. Full of Bernstein’s signature flair and exuberance, Slava! is a thrilling way to round out the evening.
Don’t miss this captivating concert featuring extraordinary talent and a wide range of musical styles!
