Portray features sixteen female artists from across the Eastern United States with works that are inspired by or pay homage to other women - both as artist and muse. The artists interpreted the open call in vastly different ways and with wide range of artistic mediums representing multi-generational viewpoints. Inspirations range from Maud Wagner, the pioneering female tattoo artist, to Georgia O’Keefe, even the pop star, Chappell Roan. Through prints, paint, and mixed-media works, the exhibit subverts an objectifying male gaze and presents a myriad of female gazes. Each piece bares the soul of the woman who created it, an echo of the woman before her. Portray is as much about the inspiration as the inspired.
