Now-January 29
Listing well-known artists as well as kindergarteners among her artistic inspirations, Jill Rakowicz’s canvases layer scraps from discarded student sketchbooks with shapes and symbols of her own devising to create a body of work that embraces the playfulness of youth yet is artistically mature. The artist has identified a common set of shapes, lines, and symbols in rudimentary mark-making that are universal but dispatched in ways that are very individual. Intuitive and raw, primitive and patterned, the artist fluctuates deftly between patterns found in nature and in the subconscious of the young. A squiggle could represent a figure, an animal, a weather pattern, or architecture- As teacher, she asks students what they created but as an artist she asks her viewer what they see.
The exhibit is open daily through January 29 during Majestic Theater Box Office hours. Admission is free.
