Now-June 16

Born in the snack capital of the world, York County Pennsylvania, in September 1999, Julia Wilmot knew she would be an artist from the moment she could hold a paintbrush. In her primary school years, she spent hours using how-to-draw books on the floor or painting with her older brother to expand her fine motor and creative skills. As she matured, artistic advancement became a priority. Julia won multiple awards throughout grade school, including a Best Photo award for the Pennsylvania Apple Harvest Festival, Best in Show for a handmade dress at the York Fair, and 1st place for a sculpture in a contest for the American Heart Association.

Julia then attended Houghton University where she received her BFA in Studio Arts with concentrations in Painting, Ceramics, and Photography. After graduating, Julia spent some time working for a professor in his ceramics studio and gallery, taught art basics for children, and helped run a book bindery. Sticking to one medium proved to be a challenge for her.

Now back at her home base in Hanover, Pennsylvania, Julia is focusing on her solo show What is Power at the Majestic Theater in Gettysburg. Using acrylic on canvas, she has been spending much of her time creating large skyscapes with fantasy elements, creating dichotomies of power in each work. She also has other works, in a variety of media, in several group shows across southern Pennsylvania.

Her exhibit, What is Power?, is the balance of passion, skills, value, and what the world needs (ikigai) that we strive for in our careers. Here, Julia strikes that balance for herself. With a love for the fantasy genre, art, deep conversations, and a desire for a better world, these works were formed. Mostly skyscapes, or powerful weather patterns, juxtaposed with a strong fantasy creature, these paintings are meant to be a conversation. What is most meaningful to you? The raw power of a fantastical beast? The might of an imposing storm? Perhaps the idea of a Creator, or God? The effectiveness of creativity through handmade art? Or the unknown unadulterated force of nature? Do the creatures in these paintings change your perception of these powers? You are encouraged to reflect on each painting, asking yourself, what is power?

The exhibit is open daily through June 16 during Majestic Theater Box Office hours. Admission is free.
